The reformer was invented by Pilates founder Joseph Pilates. The reformer machine is a bed-like frame with a platform and set of accessories utilized during the exercises. The platform where the participant sits is called the carriage, which rolls back and forth on wheels within the frame. The carriage is attached to one end of the reformer by a set of springs. The springs are changeable depending on the participant’s level of expertise, comfortability with the machine, and resistance preferred during the workout.
The Pilates reformer class structure involves controlled movements to promote length, strength, flexibility, core strength and balance. One of the best qualities of the reformer is its versatility. Exercises can be done lying down, sitting, or standing – making the reformer an exercise fit for anyone at any fitness level.
Compared to mat Pilates, the reformer creates a unique and varied exercise environment The goal of the reformer is to improve overall strength by accessing a variety of muscles, such as the core, arms, and back. The reformer is large enough to accommodate a full range of motion, which is important in increasing flexibility. The reformer offers different levels of resistance to provide stability challenges that help to develop better balance in the participant. Active participation in Pilates reformer classes leads to daily life improvements like better posture, graceful and efficient movement, and for many, pain relief due to physical imbalances.
The Crosby Wellness Center offers private, duo and small group reformer classes for both members and non-members. If you are interested in learning more about Pilates reformer classes at the Crosby, please click here or call (407) 644-3606.
