Six-Week Training Program
Franciscan Health recommends alternating between running and walking intervals to help your body gradually adjust to jogging. This method can make your training feel less overwhelming and more achievable as you progress step-by-step. Remember to run or jog at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
As you start this plan, expect increasing jogging intervals over the course of three to four days per week. Franciscan Health states that at the beginning and end of these workouts, you should warm up and cool down with a five-minute walk. Adjust the workouts as needed based on your fitness level and how you feel.
Week One (Three-Day Running Plan):
- Jogging Interval Time: 30 seconds
- Walking Interval Time: One minute of walking
- Total Workout Time: 15-20 minutes
Week Two (Four-Day Running Plan):
- Jogging Interval Time: 45 seconds
- Walking Interval Time: 45 seconds of walking
- Total Workout Time: 20-25 minutes
Week Three (Four-Day Running Plan):
- Jogging Interval Time: 60 seconds
- Walking Interval Time: 45 seconds of walking
- Total Workout Time: 20-25 minutes
Week Four (Four-Day Running Plan):
- Jogging Interval Time: 90 seconds
- Walking Interval Time: 60 seconds of walking
- Total Workout Time: 25–30 minutes
Week Five (Four-Day Running Plan):
- Jogging Interval Time: Two minutes
- Walking Interval Time: 30 seconds of walking
- Total Workout Time: 25-30 minutes
Week Six (Three-Day Running Plan):
- Jogging Interval Time: Two to five minutes
- Walking Interval Time: As needed
- Total Workout Time: 30-35 minutes
At your sixth week, Franciscan Health suggests maintaining a comfortable and steady jogging pace for about 20 minutes.
Keep moving, stay consistent and enjoy the progress you make along the way. As race day approaches, remember that completing a Turkey Trot is more than crossing the finishing line. It’s a fun way to stay active, challenge yourself and celebrate the holiday with a healthy tradition.
